ou may never have heard of the Apostles Creed, or might have heard a song by Newsboys or Petra (or if you're old enough Rich Mullins or John Michael Talbot) entitled either "We Believe" or "Creed" that contained some of the words of this very ancient and widely accepted and embraced original declaration of faith. But at any rate, you still may not be familiar with the statement in it's entirety or even understand the truths contained within each article.
As a part of our "Behind the Veil" series, we will begin with a discussion of this creed and how it is a fundamental and essential part of what we believe...and absolutely must embrace as Christians...no matter what your flavor.
What is startling to me is the number of people sitting in the pew chairs of their favorite brand of church who sing songs of praise, prayer prayers, and listen to talks of encouragement without ever truly understanding what they need and should believe! Without this firm and solid foundation, they are often caught off guard by false teachings, political or social agendas, and even their own sinful natures and desires. Their faith walk is weak at best, and their ability to hear and discern the voice of God in their personal life is virtually non-existent. As the Apostle Paul would say, they are merely babes in Christ, having no strength, no discerning, and still must be fed the milk of the Word as they have no stomach for the sincere meat of it!
Each article of this series will tackle the scriptural basis for these fundamental beliefs, the spiritual and/or practical applications of the belief in the life of a Christian, and address why this belief cannot and should not be removed from our own individual statement of faith--no matter what the world or religion may say is expedient for the moment. This, by very definition, is why they are fundamental; they are foundational to the very core of what it means to be a redeemed Christian.
